"The dancers body is simply the luminous manifestation of their soul. This is the truly creative dancer, natural but not imitative, speaking in movement out of self and out of something greater than all selves"

Tango is not a dance
by Brian McCausland (photograph by Owen McCardle)

Tango is not a dance. Because Tango is not a dance it is not about steps. Because it is not about steps I do not want to dance with those who focus merely on steps. Steps are not really important.

Tango is concerned with focus. Because it is concerned with focus I want to dance with those who strive to focus. Focus is important. I wish to dance with those who search for me in the intervals between our steps.

Tango is not a dance. Because Tango is not a dance it is not concerned with achievement. Because it is not concerned with achievement I do not want to dance with those who want to achieve. Achievement is not really important.

Tango is concerned with empathy. Because it is concerned with empathy I want to dance with those who care to empathise. Empathy is important. I wish to dance with those who desire to share humanity and harmony with me.

Tango is not a dance. Because Tango is not a dance it is not a performance. Because it is not a performance I do not want to dance with those who dance as performers. Performance is not really important.

Tango is concerned with personal commitment. Because it is concerned with personal commitment I want to dance with those who choose to commit themselves in a personal way. Personal commitment is important. I wish to dance with those who yearn to reach into the secrets of my heart.

I wish to dance with those who will enter the social space that Tango uniquely creates; who will employ technique solely for the purpose of connection; who will be considerate towards others around them in the milonga; who will dare for a moment to reveal a part of their heart to a stranger; who will bring themselves, their joy and their pain, to the dance in whatever way they can; who are ready to explore together echoes of feeling, story and personal cadence during the life of a Tango; who are willing to take part in an exchange from which they may emerge surprised, comforted, renewed... to discover love and healing.

"Tango is not a dance. It is a therapy."
